Just starting out with Noble

Postby Photon » Sat Sep 15, 2012 6:11 pm

Recently read about this format and we've been pushing it as an alternative to EDH in our local meta. So far, those that have tried it have really liked it-- myself included-- but for the most part, our local players have never played Pauper or anything like it.

Any general tips for the format? and when trying to convince people to give it a try, what are some good approachs? I've been emphasizing the "big name" EDH feel without the slow speed and inconsistency of EDH, and the general affordability of the format, barring certain expensive pieces.

Mostly, I'm just excited to discuss this format, because something about it seems really special to me. Glad to see the forums are online!

I haven't really spent much time trying to convince new people to try the format but one of the other things that you could always try include variations on the noble format like multiplayer/archenemy/planechase if that's your playgroup's thing. I've played a bunch of multiplayer with low powered decks, and it can get kind of trying with the politics when there's nobody who's clearly running away with the game as sometimes happens in EDH. Planechase sounds very fun however and I'd love to try it some day.

I've spent a good chunk of this weekend trying it out with different people in the area when we would normally play Magic. So far it's been well received. The core of our local playerbase that I spend the most time with are distrusting of multiplayer, predominantly because they find the sheer amount of time involved in it to be tiresome. Fast games are prefered much more around here. We have dabbled with some Planechase, and it was fun, but prone to all sorts of silliness that I guess we're supposed to enjoy as more casual players. Yay, nothing can attack! Only werewolves do damage! FUN! :P

Another variant that my friends and I would play a long time ago before even we played EDH was that we'd take a stack of fun cards like Empty the Catacombs and Vision Skiens and Living Death and put them in a stack. Then at the start of your turn you rolled a die and on 5/6 you'd flip a card. You could also pay like 3 mana to get a new card. It was pretty fun. You can always use the Planechase for 1v1, but I could see that being broken if you had few enough planes. I'm also not really sure what the rules for planechase are.

Fairly similar to that, actually!

I still have that stack actually and regularly update it as I get new cards for it from wherever, just nobody usually wants to play that craziness on top of EDH - the board complexity can get a little ridiculous at points. I just added Favor of the Mighty and something else today but I already forgot what I added to it.

Have you tried Horde Magic? It's also a bit similar to that, but has a cooperative focus.

I have heard about it but not tried it. It sounds fun. I played a game before where a guy just had a couple hundred awesome multiplayer cards and other powerhouse cards like a bunch of pws and we just drew 7 off the top and got a free land of whatever color we wanted each turn and went nuts in a 4 person game. It was a blast, and the coolest thing is you can just go with it using a cube as well (though you may want to make a rule where you can cash in the dual lands and mana fixers for a new card since they'd be pretty underpowered in that format).
