Discussion about the ban list - reasons, suggestions, debates, etc...

Lotus Petal

First Post here ever! And its MINE! :D

Recently on T/O the discussion came up if Lotus Petal should be banned because it enables so much fast Comboing-Off. Well, there could be a restriction, but I'm not sure about everything. What do you think? IMO it is nearly an auto-include... I think it should be banned/restricted if it leads to this: More cards than one are legal again which are currently of the Banned-List.

Let me know what you think =)

Personally I think it should be banned. Reasoning is that near every deck that I've seen which is a dedicated combo deck runs four of them. Now on the surface this doesn't seem too much more powerful than say Dark Ritual or Simian Spirit Guide, but the real issue is that it generates any color mana rather than being restricted to a single color. This enables people to start playing their rituals earlier. I'm gonna go find the most offensive combo decks which resulted in a ban and link them here to give some idea of the issue. When a card is so obviously good that near every deck has to play it or get left behind in the dust then it's a problem (think Skullclamp)

If you want to play Noble over the net, PM me and we can work out the details. I am interested in establishing a metagame.

I am not sure that lotus petal banning fixes the problem. I know that banning the facilitator is the common practice to stop deck but it is only one facilitator that is is two decks. Char belcher and storm use this thing. Wiout it they become mildly slower, but can still go off turn 1-2. I am all for stopping that, but I am not sure that lotus petal is the right card to ban.

I've been thinking about this a bit and I think the best way to approach this is to dig out a bunch of decks from the archive and play them against each other in order to see where the problems lie. I remember talking to graft about this a while back and he agreed with me. Would any of yall be able to contribute a little bit of time to playing some online magic?

Ok I've sent you a PM regarding this, it will be pretty easy to work out the details. I'm gonna suggest we start with the archetype which most often determines how formats play (aggro) and work our way from there, playing several teir 1 aggro builds (mono red burn, mono black aggro, mono green aggro) against several teir 1 combo decks (belcher, storm etc...). I'm just suggesting mono colored builds right now because it's hard in pauper to play multicolored due to the pitiful set of lands we are provided. One example is this deck I made where the noble is a rare land: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/noble-cliffs/ And yes, I really am playing only 13 lands in this build - having a turn 1 dual land is pretty dank and I never really need more than 2 lands to rock someone's face. I would like to test it against a live opponent though.
